What the calculator measures, and what it does not

The calculator uses the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), which Eurostat compiles with the same method in every EU country so that they can be compared. It is not the national consumer price index (CPI) of a country, and the two can differ.

It is not the legal index for rent or contract indexation. Rent increases, wage clauses and similar adjustments follow the index named in the contract or in the law, which is usually a national one. The result here illustrates how prices changed; it is not a figure to enter in a contract.

HICP vs CPI: what differs →

Source: Eurostat, HICP all-items monthly index (prc_hicp_minr, 2025 = 100). The calculation is euroflation's.

Frequently asked questions

In Norway, how much is NOK 1,000 from September 2016 worth in September 2026?
NOK 1,000 in September 2016 has the purchasing power of NOK 1,383 in September 2026. Prices changed by +38.3% between September 2016 and September 2026.
How does the inflation calculator work?
It multiplies the amount by the price index of the later month and divides it by the index of the earlier month: amount × index(to) ÷ index(from). The index is Eurostat's monthly all-items HICP. Only the ratio of the two months is used, so the choice of base year does not matter.
Is the calculator based on the national consumer price index (CPI)?
The calculator uses the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), which Eurostat compiles with the same method in every EU country so that they can be compared. It is not the national consumer price index (CPI) of a country, and the two can differ.
Can I use the result to index a rent or a contract?
It is not the legal index for rent or contract indexation. Rent increases, wage clauses and similar adjustments follow the index named in the contract or in the law, which is usually a national one. The result here illustrates how prices changed; it is not a figure to enter in a contract.
Which currency does the calculator use?
Prices here are measured in Norwegian Krone (NOK). Enter amounts in Norwegian Krone (NOK): the calculator never converts between currencies.
Which months can I choose?
Covers January 2000 to September 2026. Months outside this range cannot be selected.
