What savings would have earned

€10,000 kept at the average one-year deposit rate in Latvia since September 2016 grew to €11,283, which buys what €7,223 bought then.

Source: ECB, average rate on new one-year household deposits, monthly, and Eurostat HICP, September 2016 to September 2026. The calculation is euroflation's. Before tax and fees. Prices are measured with the HICP, not the national consumer price index. The bank-rate figure approximates rolling over a one-year deposit each month at the average rate banks paid on new deposits that month. It is an average over all banks, so an individual offer differs.

What the calculator measures, and what it does not

The calculator uses the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), which Eurostat compiles with the same method in every EU country so that they can be compared. It is not the national consumer price index (CPI) of a country, and the two can differ.

It is not the legal index for rent or contract indexation. Rent increases, wage clauses and similar adjustments follow the index named in the contract or in the law, which is usually a national one. The result here illustrates how prices changed; it is not a figure to enter in a contract.

Frequently asked questions

In Latvia, how much is €100 from September 2016 worth in September 2026?
€100 in September 2016 has the purchasing power of €156.22 in September 2026. Prices changed by +56.2% between September 2016 and September 2026.
How does the inflation calculator work?
It multiplies the amount by the price index of the later month and divides it by the index of the earlier month: amount × index(to) ÷ index(from). The index is Eurostat's monthly all-items HICP. Only the ratio of the two months is used, so the choice of base year does not matter.
Is the calculator based on the national consumer price index (CPI)?
The calculator uses the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), which Eurostat compiles with the same method in every EU country so that they can be compared. It is not the national consumer price index (CPI) of a country, and the two can differ.
Can I use the result to index a rent or a contract?
It is not the legal index for rent or contract indexation. Rent increases, wage clauses and similar adjustments follow the index named in the contract or in the law, which is usually a national one. The result here illustrates how prices changed; it is not a figure to enter in a contract.
Which currency does the calculator use for months before the euro?
The euro became the official currency on 1 January 2014. For months before that, read the amount as its euro equivalent at the official conversion rate; the index measures price changes and is not affected by the changeover.
Which months can I choose?
Covers January 1996 to September 2026. Months outside this range cannot be selected.
