Do savings beat inflation?
Against inflation of 3.2% over the past 12 months, that is a real loss of about 1.0%.
Real rate = (1 + deposit rate) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1, calculated by euroflation from the ECB deposit rate and the annual rate of change of Eurostat's HICP in the same month. It describes the past 12 months and is not a forecast. The HICP is not the national consumer price index.
How to read these rates
- Each figure is an average over all banks for new business in the month. Individual offers differ.
- Regulated savings accounts, where a country has them, are usually counted as deposits at notice.
- Rates are before tax.
- The newest month is provisional and the ECB may revise it.
- This is official data, not advice.
What savings would have earned
€10,000 kept at the average one-year deposit rate in the euro area since September 2016 grew to €11,145, which buys what €8,349 bought then.

Prices are measured with the HICP, not the national consumer price index. The bank-rate figure approximates rolling over a one-year deposit each month at the average rate banks paid on new deposits that month. It is an average over all banks, so an individual offer differs.
